A student asked me about this situation X and Y wrote a master’s thesis together. Y left academia after graduation. X continued in a PhD-program. On her own, X has now rewritten the thesis (added some text, taken away some text, condensed the report in general, and made some new interpretations of the results and have drawn some new conclusions) and want to publish it as a journal article. How should X handle the situation? Does X need to inform or need permission from Y? Should X include Y as a second author, mention Y under the acknowledgement, leave Y out of the manuscript but mention Y in the cover letter to the journal, or not mention Y at all? Thankful for guidance. Mary Johnson mary_johnson_email@yahoo.com

Question Guidelines

Number of questions

To ensure that everyone gets a fair chance, we ask that you send no more than three questions in a day.

Factual questions only, please!

We are not equipped to offer advice, analyse an issue, or give opinions. For example, we cannot deal with legal issues or give a medical opinion. We can only handle questions to which a documented factual answer might exist.

Please give us some background

Knowing a bit more about why you are asking your question will help us to find the right answer. Tell us:

Projects, essays and research

Please don't expect us to do your project or essay for you! We can help by pointing you to information sources to help with your research, but it is up to you to interpret them and to write your essay in the way your teacher is expecting you to.

Questions about your computer

We sometimes get questions asking for help to sort out a problem with a computer. We cannot give help of this kind. If you are having problems with your computer it is best to seek help from the hardware or software supplier or to look at their web sites.

Double check your e-mail addres

We can't reply to your question if you haven't given your correct e-mail address. Please check that you have a workable e-mail address before you ask your question and then double check that you have entered it correctly.
